1950s Rock ‘n’ Rolling Revival

Over here in the UK we are enjoying a 1940s and 1950s revival, fuelled by the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations earlier this year. A revival which has filtered through into all aspects of my life, both socially and at home. As well as collecting and selling antiques, or in this case, antiques of the future (I’ll get to that later), as a hobby I enjoy dancing. I am lucky enough to attend a growing number of 1940s and 1950s revival dances, where Rock ‘n’ Roll, Jive and even a Quick Step or two are the call of the night. And what fun to dress up in period outfits! Buying and selling antiques and collectables is a small community, which has oddly combined with my social life; I may see a plainly dressed lady nosing through a box of scarves and gloves at a vintage fair in the morning, while I am out hunting for collectables to sell, then I will see her in the evening, dancing the night away, victory rolls a go!

Clearly dancing is a physical activity and a lady is likely to work up to a glisten! One thing she cannot do without is her hand fan. Initially I started buying them to take dancing but my collection has grown and now some are for sale on Etsy.com:

Naturally my dancing has developed a love of vintage clothing, jewelry and accessories, which happily I can wear once or twice then sell in my Etsy shop! Here are just a few of my favourites I have for sale:

I have to mention at this point that I have barely began to sell vintage clothing and accessories as I like to keep them for myself! And so, I have to nod my head at some fabulous items I have found for sale on Etsy:

As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, it is not just vintage fashion which is growing in popularity. When it comes to collectables and antiques my passion is for pottery and I have found that I am selling more and more pieces which date from that period:

I love the way my working life has merged with my hobbies. Let’s hope I continue to sell more pieces which date from this era, as they will fund my next vintage dancing dress!

What are you doing New Year’s Eve?

Do you kiss at midnight to fend off a year of loneliness?

Do you eat a special food to bring you luck? My grandmother insists that we come eat sauerkraut every January 1st for good luck. I hate sauerkraut which may be why I have such bad luck.

Do you wear brand new clothes on January 1st to ensure a full closet?

Do you scare the evil spirits away at midnight with noise makers?

Do you check the direction of the wind? I myself am hoping for a south wind for some money and happiness. A north wind means a year full of bad weather. Wind from the East expect a year of bad luck. A wind from the west could mean a death of someone important to you.

How about washing in silver? I only know of one family that does this and that’s right it’s my grandparents. A bowl fool of cold water with silver dollars and coins await us January 1st. If you don’t wash it then you hear all year long as to why you are stricken with bad luck.

Snowman

My mother has a collection of snowmen and santa clauses. She displays her collection every other year. This year it’s her snowman collection. Her growing collection is no doubt my fault. I used to buy her a santa or snowman for Christmas. She has a mix of antique, vintage and new santas.

2012 Jamestown Parade

Friday was the Jamestown Parade down 3rd Street. We grabbed a friend… Ok truth time. I couldn’t make it the whole parade. It’s seriously bigger and longer than I think Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. I go every year because it’s tradition but I’m good for an hour to an hour and a half. By the time the fireworks were lit I was snug in my home having cocktails with Bruce and my friend Brickley. Glogg and Eggnog finished the night.

Old Fashion Santa Parade

Last weekend we hit the burg, that’s right Frewsburg for our first Old Fashion Santa Parade. The Frewsburg Parade ended up being our favorite parade of the year. The parade was full of horses and holiday music. We just had our iphone on us so our pics aren’t perfect but I’ll still share.

Mason Jars

Mason Jars were manufactured back in 1858 by John Landis Mason. The jars were used as food preservation. Today, collectors use these utilitarian jars in every creative way imaginable. We always had ball jars growing up in our household… There was a short time where my mom had a large garden and she would preserve everything imaginable. My favorite phase was a grape juice craze she went through. What’s your favorite use for a mason jar preservation or crafts? Today, I use my mason jars to stock my pantry full of pasta, cereal, chocolate chips. I like them because it keeps spices and grains fresh and you can see what’s in it.

Things to look for when hunting for mason jars

Black Glass Jars are the most coveted
Ball Blue a light blue is popular
Milk Glass, Amber and greens are rare
